FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is used to transfer files one computer to the other in a network. FTP can be used to exchange files between computers or transfer files between two or more computers. 

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol. As the name suggests it is used to transfer or copy a file from one computer to another over a TCP/IP-based network, such as the Internet. FTP is client-server architecture based design and is uses different control and connection between the client and server to transfer data. A clear text sign in protocol might me required to authenticate the FTP Users, but it can connect anonymously if the configuration of the server allows it. 

The first FTP client applications were interactive command-line tools, implementing standard commands and syntax. Graphical user interface clients have since been developed for many of the popular desktop operating systems in use today.

FTP can be run both in active or passive mode, it is completely dependent on how the data connection is establish. In an active mode, the IP address and the port number where the clients will listen is send by the client, and the TCP connection is initiated by the server. Passive mode is used only when the client is behind a fire wall and is unable to accept the incoming TCP connection.  In this type of a connection the client sends a PASV command to the server and receives an IP address and port number in return. To open the data connection to the server client uses the this type of FTP connection.

Commands and replies are sent in ASCII text using Telnet format 

FTP server listens on TCP ports 21 (control) and 20 (data)
